EchoState is a browser-based psychological simulation where characters form memories, develop opinions, spread rumors, and react emotionally over time. Every decision leaves a lasting echo across a living social network.
“I'm watching how you treat people around here.”
Getting Started
EchoState looks complex, but using it is simple. Here is what it is, the problem it solves, and exactly how to get value from it in your first few minutes.
A living world of AI-driven characters who remember your actions, form genuine opinions, gossip about you, and change how they treat you over time — all running entirely in your browser.
Characters in most games and apps have goldfish memory — they forget you the moment you walk away. EchoState models persistent, social memory so worlds feel reactive, consequential, and alive.
It is a sandbox for game designers, researchers, and curious minds to study how reputation spreads, how trust erodes, and how small choices cascade into lasting social consequences — no servers or API keys required.
Open the simulation and pick an NPC. Choose an action — help, betray, gift, threaten, compliment — and watch their emotional state shift instantly.
Each action writes a memory and nudges five emotional axes through the character's unique personality. A Manipulator forgives nothing; a Loyalist gives second chances.
Notable deeds travel across the relationship graph. Friends of friends hear what you did — even characters you've never met start forming opinions.
Advance the day. Scheduled consequences fire, and the timeline links each effect back to the exact cause. Nothing is random — everything has a reason.
Core Systems
Each system is a pure, composable module. Together they produce emergent behavior that feels persistent rather than scripted.
Every NPC stores timestamped, categorized memories of what you did and what they heard. Memories decay in salience but never silently vanish.
Five emotional axes — trust, fear, respect, anger, affection — evolve per interaction and drift toward a personality baseline over time.
Six global reputation dimensions track honesty, kindness, violence, generosity, greed and reliability across the whole world.
Seven archetypes — Loyalist, Rebel, Manipulator and more — each interpret identical actions through different psychological lenses.
NPCs are bound by friendship, rivalry, family, alliance and distrust, visualized as a live, force-directed network.
Context-aware, rule-based dialogue generated from emotional state, memories and personality. No paid AI model required.
Notable actions ripple outward through the social graph. Trusted, well-connected NPCs spread information fastest.
Actions schedule delayed outcomes. Steal on day 1, and the guards may come looking on day 8.
Architecture
EchoState separates pure simulation logic from presentation. The engines are deterministic functions; an event-driven store composes them; the UI simply renders state. The entire world persists locally — no servers, no API keys, no cost.

About the Developer
EchoState was conceived, architected, and engineered by Raghav Kaushal, a Computer Science student from India with a deep curiosity for how memory, emotion, and reputation can be modeled in software. The project reflects a belief that simulated worlds become meaningful only when characters truly remember.
Raghav is aspiring to pursue future opportunities at top-tier institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell University, where he hopes to advance research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and human behavior.
Interact with characters, watch opinions ripple through the network, and trace every consequence back to its cause.
